- Every valid user of this facility can host a homepage
subject to his/her disk quota. Create a folder called
public_html in your home directory.
mkdir ~/public_html
- The first page of your homepage that people see must
be called index.html (or index.shtml). Create an
index.html however and wherever you want, and copy it
into public_html.
cp index.html ~/public_html/
- Now you must give people permissions to view your webpage.
cd ~/..
chmod 711 username (Of course, substitute username with your login)
cd ~
chmod 711 public_html
- This is, of course, the most restrictive permission
set that would allow other people to view your
homepage without allowing them to browse your
directory. You can certainly set less strict permissions.
Google
"chmod file permissions" to get some helpful
tutorials. Now when someone types http://www.physics.cornell.edu/~username in his/her browser, your homepage is going to pop up!
