 IMAPS
You can access your email at the facility from any remote location using your favorite mail reader by utilizing protocol called IMAP (or IMAPS for the secure version which we support). Most modern email readers (mutt, pint, evolution, eudora, outlook, etc.) support this protocol.
You can use this protocol from any machine in the facility as well, however it is faster to use the local configuration instead.

Configuration
server type: imap
imap server: imaps.physics.cornell.edu
use SSL
password authentication
outgoing smtp server: authsmtp.physics.cornell.edu
use TLS
password authentication
outgoing mail on the facility: use sendmail

Examples: Evolution, Thunderbird

SSL Security is a priority, therefore only encrypted connections are allowed. Upon the first connection to the server you will be presented with the fingerprint of the encryption key. You must accept the certificate to contnue. The signature is labeled as BAD, which only means that it has not been verified by VeriSign or similar entity that guarantees the authenticity of the certificates (we did not pay for this).
